Oz Ramsar Sites

I was looking at a range of international environmental agreements yesterday,
and happened upon the World list of RAMSAR sites at
http://www.ramsar.org/sitelist.pdf

I have reproduced the Australian section, with sites grouped by state [so people
who are interested can see where their nearest sites are].

It is interesting to see that all of Tasmania's sites were declared in 1982,
while a number of WA sites were only listed last year. Also of interest, most
sites in Tas, Vic and NSW are relatively small, while virtually all the sites in
Qld, SA and NT are very large [Coongie Lakes in SA would appear - not working
through the maths - to be bigger than all the sites in Vic, Tas and NSW
combined]. Mind you, you couldn't get a much smaller site than Hosnie?s Spring
on Christmas Island ...

Finally, it is interesting to see that there are Ramsar sites on the doorsteps
of Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne, and that there is a degree of clumping, with
multiple sites around SE Qld, SW WA, the Kimberley and the Top End ...
