Hello,

Today (17.2.02), myself and eight other members of the HBOC travelled up to Old Bar, which is just south of Taree NSW to track down a Kentish Plover which was seen on the 14.2.02.  After 8hrs of searching the bird was located at a high tide roost about 3pm.  All had good views  and the bird was roosting with Red-capped Plover, Stint and Double-banded Plover, which enabled direct comparison of the 4 species.

Directions.  Travel to Old Bar.  Turn left just prior to the caravan park and drive out along the river mouth road.  Park in the second carpark on the right(the one with a 4wd beach access). Walk down to the beach and then north to the fenced off Little Tern colony(200m).  Follow the fence for a couple of hundred metres on the beach side.  I have left a pink cup full of rocks on top of the fence post next to where we saw the K.Plover.  Walk along the fence line and not the beach, so as to not scare the birds.  The K.Plover was roosting on the small rocks very close to the waves.  Hard to see at first, as it blends in well, but once located the white collar is very distinctive.  It was about 150m south of the river mouth.

This is the high tide roost and we were unable to find it after 4hrs of searching the sand spits at low tide earlier in the day.

Regards
