Australia Day - a day to get out and see some of Australia. So off to Deep
Creek, a creek off Narrabeen Lakes (approx 20 km
north of Sydney) with Robin Murray and Ruth Cotton.
I had heard about this as a good place for birdwatching. The path goes through
some bush which is a mixture of native plants
and many weeds, and occasionally goes along the edge of the creek itself.
We clocked up over 20 species on a very hot day and after a late start,
including:
** Golden Whistler male and 2 females
** Dollarbirds flying and croaking, and sitting on top of dead branches high
up and surveying the scene
** Australasian Grebe
** White-eared Honeyeater
** Grey Fantail
** Eastern Yellow Robin
** Eastern Rosella
** Azure Kingfisher
Then around to Long Reef. Grey-tailed Tattler (standing still) and Red-necked
Stints (zapping around fast) were the main
features, plus the usual assortment of seagulls, Crested Tern and Great
Cormorant.
Exploring the rockpools was of course exploring another world. Fun finds were
a decorator crab, blennies, Smooth Toadfish
(Tetractenos glaber), shrimps and a Tassel-snouted flathead (Thysanophrys
cirranasus).
