Hi All

Today was definitely crake day for me and my first new bird of the year,
Baillon's Crake, not once but twice! Often the way when you first see a bird
,you then find they are everywhere!

1. Walka Water Works ( Near Maitland NSW )

Far corner from entrance ( near main railway )

Australian Spotted Crake 2
Baillon's Crake 1 viewed at about 20 metres for at
least 2 minutes.
Also good views of Tawny and Little Grassbirds. On the way to WWW saw a
female Common Blackbird.( Not so common for our area ) Other good birds
included Musk Duck and Great Crested Grebe.

2. Shortland Wetland Centre

Spotless Crake 1 on the Dam Pond , same "spot" ( pun intended ) as
21/1/2001.

3. Ash Island

Australian Spotted Crake 1
Baillon's Crake 1 viewed in full sun at about 4 metres
until Spotted chased it away. Justice was done when a Purple Swamp Hen
chased away the Spotted.

Lenaghans's Drive Glossy Ibis down to 1, no sign of the Freckled Ducks.

As is also often the way with new birds , and good views of them , my video
camera was at home in the cupboard. Might try again on Ash Island tomorrow
as water level is so low they will no doubt be easy to see again. Then again
?

Cheers
