Southern Cassowary was certainly a big 'wannasee' when I visited Cairns in
1999. I was led to believe they were not easy around Cairns and so I
travelled to Mission Beach and stayed over night. I must have spent between
200 and 300 AUSD in order to see this species (and would have spent more).
Furthermore, I would imagine that there are very few British birders (world
birders?) who would consider coming to FNQ without trying to see cassowary.
This must add up to a lot of bucks. Perhaps it's time that the local
government woke up to this.
