Last week while holidaying at Lake Cathie, 15 km south of Port Macquarie,
I was not at all surprised to Brahminy Kites. These birds were regularly
picked up by the Hunter Thickhead twitchathon team in their early days at
Camden Haven just to the south. They are also regularly seen on the
Manning and occasionally on the Hunter.
However, as a boy growing up in Wauchope in the 1970's I used to go
fishing, and birding, quite a bit around Port Macquarie and Brahminy Kites
were never seen. Having made that statement, Alan Morris probably has
information to the contrary. Certainly I never saw them. The first one I
ever saw was at Sawtell near Coffs Harbour.
It has been interesting to see the expansion of range of this species
southward. It has also been interesting to see the expansion of other
littoral species such as the Beach Thick-knee and the increase in numbers
of Ospreys.
