Oriental pratincole

Hi all,

Was in the New England area on the weekend so took the opportunity to get to Dangar's Lagoon. Found the Oriental Pratincole almost instantly in the location that several people described. So very nice of the bird to sit outside the hide!

Also present were loads of ducks (Pink-eared, Aust Shoveller, Hardhead, Pacific Black, Wood), a single Black-tailed Native-hen, lots of Black-winged Stilts, Black Swans, Royal Spoonbills and the usual pond junk. There were several pairs of Red-kneed Dotterels along the edge, and Marsh Sandpipers and Red-necked Stints in the shallows.

A great wetland to visit for a morning. 

We also went to a smaller lagoon called Thomas' Lagoon, about halfway between Uralla and Armidale, just west of the highway. Similar bird community here (although the lagoon is much smaller), minus the pratincole, and Black-fronted Dotterel instead of Red-kneed. Lots of Red-necked Stints here.

Went back to Uralla to see it again today - Fabulous views through telescope.   It was in just the same place and appears to me to be just about in full breeding dress.
