Hi All,
Yes it is very hot up here but the hot weather seems to be attracting the
Fork-tailed Swifts. On 26th their was 1000+ ( a guesstimate) zipping about
the skies above Cairns - despite intensive watching no other species were
observed with them. Also on the coast were 2 juvenile and 1 adult Pied Heron
at Yorkeys Knob Lagoon (16° 48' 35"S 145° 42' 51"E) beside the golf course.
Pied Herons are irregular visitors around Cairns. A couple of Torresian
Crows flew over our house on the 26th (unusual on the coast here). Several
Broad-billed Sandpipers were seen on the Cairns Esplanade on Christmas Day,
as we enjoyed the cooling sea breeze.
