Coolart Jazz Festival 2002 Weekend 11th, 12th & 13th
January

 "Hot Jazz at Coolart"

The Rotary Club of Hastings has made some changes for
this great holiday Festival this year. To be held as
usual in the superb gardens of Parks Victoria?s
Coolart Homestead. Coolart, Lord Somers Road, Somers.

 (Melways 193 J8)

Times: Sat. 2.00 pm to 11.30 pm and Sun. 3.00 pm to
9.00 pm.

Continuous Jazz in THREE venues, the Lawns, the
Observatory, and this year a nightclub in the Stables.

SUNDAY CONCERT:
The highlight this year is undoubtedly The James
Morrison Sextet concert on the Sunday. We are very
privileged that this superb six-piece band with
special guest vocalist Emma Pask has agreed to grace
us at Coolart. Better still the George Washing Machine
and Ian Date Quintet will join them to provide an
exciting concert of the very best of Jazz. The Prahran
Market Band and Yvette Johansson will entertain the
audience during the afternoon preceding the start of
the concert, they will also provide the music at the
Gospel Service, reinstated this year.

The location will be St Mark?s Anglican Church,
Balnarring, opposite the Shopping Centre.

A start-time of 12.00 Midday has been agreed to allow
time for ticket holders to make their way to Coolart
Sunday Concert.

SATURDAY PICNIC DAY
Saturday is the day when jazz lovers, friends and
families come together to picnic, BBQ and join in the
fun at Coolart.

The afternoon will open with the Woodleigh School Jazz
Band inspired and led by the legendary Gil Askey. The
Mornington Peninsula Big Band, a very professional
group of local Jazz identities will then swing into
action. The main stage on the lawns will then play
host to four of Victoria?s leading Jazz Bands;
Steve Waddell?s Creole Bells,
Ashley Keating?s Louisiana Shakers,
and Bill Lawler?s New Orleans Wonderdogs, plus the
Graeme Steel?s Jazz Communication, throughout the
afternoon and evening.

The air conditioned Observatory Theatre encourages
that intimate relationship between musicians and their
audience. This suits the styles of the Peninsula Jazz
Band, Inna Tube, Blue Ice Jazz and the Penny Farthing
Jazz Band all of whom have entertained at Coolart in
various guises. After much feedback from the younger
generations last year, we have decided to convert the
Stables into a nightclub.

This venue will allow an informal party atmosphere
with a definite change of pace in the Jazz style from
our usual Traditional base. For this we have secured
the West Australian Jazz Award 2000 winners
HIP-MO-TOAST. This is Perth?s favourite band, from the
intimate to the funky; they play darn good Jazz and
certainly know how to wow their audience. Alongside
them will be Don Hirst and his new band Rollin? and
Tumblin? Blues. Don Hirst has been a favourite at the
last two Festivals, his Fifties jazz is played with a
lively style that really gets everyone steppin?! There
will also be further entertainment with the
alternative style of Inna Tube.

FRIDAY CHARITY DANCE
This year we are joining forces with The BAYS HOSPITAL
GROUP to run the charity JAZZ Dance. The theme will be
? All Aboard the Mississippi? with music by the
inimitable Steve Waddell?s Creole Bells. Tickets for
this event, which includes a full dinner and wine, are
strictly limited and will be organized in tables of
10.

Tickets for the evening are $85 per head and this
includes a tax deductible $30 donation to the Bays
Hospital to assist in the provision of high care beds
in the Hastings Hospital to meet the needs of those
who fall outside the Private Funding system. The
evening will also involve a silent auction with items
donated by local businesses in support of the
Hospital.

Food and refreshments of all kinds will be available,
including a Spit Roast on both the Saturday and Sunday
evenings. Local peninsula wines will be on sale and as
well as Gourmet Food, Fresh Coffee, Soft drinks,
Strawberries, Cream Teas etc.

A Bar service will operate from the Stables Venue.

in this
