Hi Everyone,
Spring is happening with lots of birds starting to call in the last few
weeks including Red-necked Crake, Emerald Dove, Pheasant Coucal, Noisy
Pitta, Cicadabird and the return of some of the migrants, Pied Imperial
Pigeons, Metallic Starlings and many waders.
The Cairns Esplanade is just about to have work start on the next stage of
development with the seawall to be built around the filled in area at the
southern end. Good numbers of waders are passing through the Esplanade
including Sharp-tailed and Curlew Sandpipers, Great Knots, Bar and
Black-tailed Godwits along with Red-necked Stints, Greater and Lesser
Sandplover and a few Pacific Golden Plovers. Over 600 Silver Gulls were
counted, inc. many juvenile birds (no Little Terns, Jill) A Ruddy Turnstone
was seen amongst the waders at the mouth of the Barron River on Redden
Island on Sunday during the Birds Aust. North Qld Group outing - not a
common wader on the coast more often out on the islands. Also on Redden
Island we had great views of Double-eyed Fig-Parrots feeding in a fig tree
(also in here were Brown-backed and Brown Honeyeater, Rufous Whistler,
Figbird and Sunbirds) and clocked up 60 species in 3 hours.

Cheers,
Keith & Lindsay Fisher
