Terry Pacey mentioned that the Gold Coast Bird Observers failed to see
several of their targets in the Lockyer Valley the other day, including
Cotton Pygmy Geese at Lake Atkinson.

There were 30 or more pairs of pygmy-geese at the lake today, all very much
in the south-western arm. Anyone who would like to catch up with these
beautiful little ducks should go to the main recreation area adjacent to the
caravan park on Atkinson Dam Road, and then head for the furthest end away
from the caravan park, ie away from the main dam wall and past the boat
ramp. Just follow the shore or the tracks as far as you can in that
direction. Today there were quite literally thousands of waterbirds there
with the pygmy-geese strung out amongst them.

The birds at Seven Mile Lagoon are harder to get close to. Mostly, they can
be seen quite well from the roads on the north-western side of the lagoon,
(with several Pallid Cuckoos on the lines there this-afternoon). But there
is no access to the lake except through private property, so unfortunately
close examination of the shoreline isn't possible without permission from
local landholders, which makes the smaller waders much harder to see.

Good though to hear from Terry that their disappointment on dipping on some
of the birds was compensated for by ten raptor spp for the day!

I've been around the area quite a lot these past few days, but have seen
nothing more of the Australian Pratincoles. However, I've just this-evening
put a photo on the Abberton website, along with Spotted Harrier and a few
others. But do bear in mind that the Aust Pratincole photo, which was taken
through a 'scope by a visiting birder, is really just a snapshot image for
the record.
