When I was a teenager in the 50s I used to visit a relations farm on
the Eyre Peninsular to "work". One of the jobs was to pick up rabbits
after a 1080 oats trail was laid. We used to get a pile about 20 m
across and 3 m high over 2 days. The "crows", Little Ravens I think,
used too eat so much they could not fly and we used to catch them by
hand. The only other casualty was the odd fox.
Another job was to get wild cat kittens from the sheds and hay stacks
as well as trap the adults using rabbit traps and a live rabbit tied to
a post. I got around 20 cats at the start, as well as the odd
fox, but after 4 years only the odd cat could be found.
Later birding trips always included a .22 to pop off any ferals. But
John H made that illegal. Judging by the number seen while birding I
think that there are a lot more foxes now than before the gun ban .
  Cheers Chris
