Hi Meloni and BIRDING-AUSers
Heather & Robertson is the best Field Guide for NZ - it is the most
up to date and the plates are excellent. There was a recently
updated edition - 2000 I think.
As for birding, the Oceanwings trip out of Kaikoura is not to be missed

A good place to stay in Kaikoura is the Dusky Lodge - check on the
web for this I'm sure they have a page (Information Centre in
Kaikoura does at least)
Cheers
Brent
There have been a number of messages recently inquiring about a variety of
international bird guides. I'm writing to add my request for suggestions
as to a good field guide for birds of NZ.
I will be traveling to the south island the end of June and would also be
interested in suggestions for good birding spots, scenic attractions, and
cozy accommodations.
Thanks,
Meloni
