 ```>From AUSLIG's newsletter - regards - David *************************************** As the Cocky flies Calculate the direct distance between two locations in Australia using AUSLIG's new interactive tool. More details @: http://www.auslig.gov.au/new.htm#cocky or go direct to the calculator at http://www.auslig.gov.au/mapping/names/distance.htm As the Cocky flies Now you can calculate the direct distance between two locations in Australia using AUSLIG's new interactive tool, As the Cocky Flies. It uses a method known as "the great circle distance between points", which is useful for a wide range of projects, including: radio propagation; gliding, ballooning and sailing; plant and animal studies (for example, how far a mob of kangaroos travel in search of feed); sales and marketing statistics; school projects; and scientific studies. Why not try it now? Click on the Cocky at left to calculate a distance. The calculation is based on spherical trigonometry, and assumes that one minute of arc is one nautical mile, and one nautical mile is 1.852 kilometres. Great circle distance varies from actual road distance. For instance, if you were to travel along the Birdsville Track between Marree and Birdsville, you would cover 517 km. The great circle distance, however (as the Cocky flies) is only 435.4 km.
