South Island NZ

My wife and I are planning to visit the South Island next year. The
commitments of the Academic year mean that we either have to go in the
mid-semester break (September) or after the Semester
ends(i.e.mid-November). In terms of optimal balancing of weeather and
finding birds, which would be preferable?
