At Easter 1999 was camping at Goodnight Scrub west of Gin Gin.To my amazement saw a Striated Heron fishing from rocks in a shallow section of the South Burnett River. Not a mangrove or meleleuca within cooee. The site was at least 60 km from the coast. On my return home excitedly informed a wiser and more experienced birder who calmly and gently informed me this was indeed possible and plausible.(My initial excitment on seeing the bird was that I'd finally scored a bittern.I had to work very hard to acknowledge that i was seeing a Striated Heron, even though I was quite familiar with the bird- but always in the context of coastal mangroves and mud flats)
