some interesting observations lately, if nothing especially rare.
A rather surprising occurrence yesterday of Beach Stone-curlew on
Leanyer Swamp, though admittedly not too far from mangroves.
Also at the swamp a Ruff still present and several Swinhoe's Snipe.
Little Kingfisher at Howard Springs this morning. One seen, with at
least another two heard calling from different parts of the park.
Also this morning, there were at least 16 Bush Stone-curlews in
the front yard of a residential block in Berrimah, just on the edge of
Darwin. Several were immature, though all were well grown. The
birds were just inside the fence, not far from the road and all but a
couple were standing. I don't doubt that there were some that I
didn't manage to see, so the number was presumably higher.
Last Saturday, a Rufous Owl in the Botanic Gardens was clutching
the lower half of a Northern Brushtail Possum. The possum was
neatly 'sheared off' at the breast, so that the half that remained
looked in pristine condition.
I'm off birding again this afternoon so hopefully will continue the
productive weekend.
