Hello Birding-Ausers,
If birdwatchers from the 'Greater Brisbane Area' (particularly the northern
part) are looking for a bit of easy and interesting birdwatching I suggest they
consider a trip to Woody Point on the Redcliffe Peninsula just north of
Brisbane.
The main birding attractions at the moment are the Bar-tailed Godwits and the
Great Knots coming into breeding plumage.
Anyone who hasn't seen these birds in these plumages has really missed
something.
Also, there is the opportunity to see at close quarters Crested Terns in
immature, juvenile and adult stages of development.
The best place to view these birds is just to the east of the jetty.
The stony 'beach' there is a favoured resting area for those three species along
with:
Pied Oystercatchers
Ruddy Turnstone
Little Pied Cormorant
and, if you are lucky at the moment,
Curlew Sandpiper
Grey-tailed Tattler.
Getting to Woody Point is easy.
Simply cross the Houghton Highway Bridge from Brisbane to Redcliffe and follow
the Hornibrook Esplanade along the waterfront.
At the point, a couple of kilometers, where the Esplanade sweeps to the left
take the turn-off to the right and weave your way through the new maze of
round-abouts and centre parking plots to the jetty.

There is a walking path along the retaining wall and there are picnic shelters
making Woody Point a pleasant place to spend a few hours.
Also, there are snack bars and a pub that seems to have a good reputation (I
spend very little time in pubs these days).
Plenty of parking.
Probably the best time to visit is during the week an hour or two before or
after high-tide.
But any time is better than never.
