Visited the Bendigo Mining Settling Ponds today,
following Chris Tzaros' recent posting. Only spent about 1 hour there and
did not see any Sandpipers, much less the Pectoral. Remembering the 'scope
would have helped. Waterbirds there generally are numerous and varied,
however.
Musk Duck - several
Pink-eared Duck - several dozen
Grey Teal
Black Duck
Black Swan
Aust Grebe
Hoary-headed Grebe
Coot
Black-winged Stilt
Red-necked Avocet
Yellow-billed Spoonbill
Silver Gull
Red-kneed Dotterel
Black-fronted Dotterel
Black-tailed Native Hen
The air above the ponds wasswarming, literally,
with mixed flocks of Fairy Martins and Welcome Swallows, estimated at least
200.
It was windy and hard to spot moement in the trees,
but the bush around the ponds had
Crested Shrike-tit
Red-rumped Parrot
Crested Pigeon
Superb Fairy-Wren
Silvereye
Noisy Miner
Magpie
Magpie-Lark
Willie Wagtail
White-plumed Honeyeater
As Chris suggested, get permission from Bendigo
Mining to get in and walk around, take the scope and watch out for joe
blakes. Sandra Burns or Doug Burner on 03 5447 7340. It's a great
spot.
