Dear listers and others,
Despite the rain in various parts of Sydney, which we managed to completely
avoid, birds were doing their best to surprise and entertain, ie:
Sat 3.3.01 Metromix Wetland, Cronulla
1 Striated heron fishing; Chestnut Teal, Black duck,
White-faced Heron, Masked
lapwings, A.Pelican, only 3 Silvergulls, 1 Musk Duckk
(male) - it looks as if the recent
redevelopment of this site is starting to attract a greater
variety/number of species.
Solander's Point - no seabirds of note but a Hobby skimming
the heath.
Sun 4.3.01 This was a very good day. Noted birds were -
Mitchell Park 100+ Spine-tailed Swifts shot through 10.15-10.30 am.
1 male Cicada bird. 1 Azure Kingfisher. No Powerful Owl!
Near Newmans Road - 1 imm. Dollarbird.
No Bazas in sight at the reserve and their nest had
vanished - blown away in
the recent storms maybe.
Scheyville NP Scarlet Honeyeaters still present in the Grey Box blossoms.
1 juv. Brush Cuckoo preening in the sun. Pair of Bee-eaters.
Pitt Town Lagoon Nothing of note, overflowing with water and awful
noise from the adjoining
remote control toy plane field. Pleasant spot for lunch
under the fig by the church.
Colo River area on the road that leads up to Wollomi NP, 300+ King Parrots
(with only 1 fully
(after left turn plumaged male) feeding on green berries in privet
at Somerset.

20+ Spine-tailed Swifts - 3.45 pm - with another lone one
a bit further on.
Up the hill and into the forest - Comleroi (spelling?) Road - leads to
Wheeny Creek
1 Spotted Nightjar flushed in woodland.
2 male Spotted Quail-thrush disputing territory by the road
side - watched them
fronting up to each other, jumping a metre in the air,
jumping over each other,
trying to 'bump' each other - one would fly up and over
into the shrubs, followed
by the other, then back onto the road side, and repeat the
jumping and attempts to
'bump'. About 5 minutes of this, then one flew straight up
the road past our car,
closely followed by the other. Couldn't see any sign of
attempts to peck and no
feathers flew.
Down hill a kilometre or so, after the turning to Mountain Lagoon - 1 large
very healthy looking Koala in a tall gum - full sunshine - wonderful photo
opportunity! Didn't have the camera.
Kurrajong Pair of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos feeding in
pinetree in a garden.
Turf Farms Richmond 1 immature Peregrine on telegraph post
having been disturbed from
kill of Crested Pigeon lying beheaded on roadside. Head
coloration dark grey
rather than black, and dull sooty grey mantle/wings instead
of mid grey.
And the rain was all falling on Sydney!
