Dear Birding Ausers
The Chapmans and the Tarburtons will never forget 7th January 1969 for we
crossed the Nullarbor (old road) while the official temperature at Nullarbor
Station was 119oF (48.3oC). To stay alive we were soaking two towels in
water then jaming them in the door way, with the windows down. Although the
towels dried out in 10 mins, this turned the vehicle into a Coolgardie safe
and dropped the internal temperature by about 10oC. But what were the
Nullarbor birds doing?
While visiting one of the cave entrances by the road on Nullarbor Station we
found 3 Richard's Pipits and 3 Zebra Finches sitting on the ground close to
the cave opening - where very cool air was issuing from the cave mouth.
Local knowledge can be useful!!
