Hi all,
I've just received a report of a Bush Stone-curlew which turned up during
December 2000 in Sun Valley (approx 60km west of Sydney in the Blue
Mountains, NSW). The bird was attacked by domestic geese and taken to a vet
but unfortunately died. I'm still trying to chase this up but I don't think
the body was kept.
This is the Blue Mountains Bird Observers' first record of the species and
as far as I am aware it has otherwise not been seen for many years in the
Blue Mountains. According to Smith & Smith's "Fauna of the Blue Mountains"
it was common in 1923, at least in the north-east of the area around Upper
Colo. I understand there have been relatively recent records from the
Hawkesbury/Nepean areas west of Sydney. (What is their current status
there, Alan?)
Sun Valley is a volcanic diatreme which originally supported tall eucalypt
forest but has been partly cleared, mainly for horses. It lies near the
head of Fitzgeralds Creek which flows through the lower mountains to the
Nepean River.
I would appreciate hearing if anyone has, or knows of any other records of
Bush Stone-curlew in the Blue Mountains.
