In reply to Colin Scouler's inquiry I contacted Ian Hutton who is at present on Lord Howe. He replied Hi Peter, the Chaffinch has never bred here at Lord Howe - but every other summer one to five turn up - presumably from New Zealand with the southeasterly winds at that time- usually seen around the airport- and stay a few days, occasionally a few weeks. Sometimes also Greenfinch and Goldfinch turn up similarly. So if you visited Lord Howe once , when these birds were here, you might presume they were common; but they dont stay too long. The same with Shining Bronze cuckoo- 1 or 2 turn up in summer - sometimes seen away from settlement e.g. Boat Harbour Ian Birding-Aus is on the Web at www.shc.melb.catholic.edu.au/home/birding/index.html To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe birding-aus" (no quotes, no Subject line) to |
