Apologies for the delay in this report, but have just returned from the
trip and my computer's been out to lunch since then.
On Sunday 8 October, at Deep Lead FFR in the Ironbarks Forest just north
of Stawell, SW Victoria, we were looking for (and at!) an extremely rare
and endangered orchid (Caladenia fulva) when we heard, then saw at least
2 or 3 Painted HEs feeding in mistletoe in Eucalyptus tricarpa. Numbers
were hard as they were constantly harried by Fuscous HEs (at other times
a species I'm fond of!).
On a personal note, this has been my bete noir (et blanc!) for about 25
years, so I was quite pleased... The orchid was pretty exciting too, so
it was a champagne evening.
