Sorry to trivialise John's ealier posting.... must be the weather.
I have the impression that animals do some things in their "spare time"
just because they are able to and that this obfuscates attempts at rational
interpretation.
How does one rationalise the antics of the various cockatoos, juvenile
magpies playing tug-o-war with sticks and pieces of string, dolphins
deliberately chaninging course to ride bow waves before peeling off to
follow their original course etc.
I suspect that Pelicans (globally) actually just enjoy riding thermals and
air currents to no obvious purpose.
