In the Capertee Valley, west of Lithgow, NSW,. Saturday/Sunday 9th/10th
Sept. for BIGNET (Bird Interest Group Network of NSW), Rainbow Bee-eaters
were seen at Glen Davis and heard on Goollooinboin, and on Sunday also in
Red Rock Creek.
A flock of 9 Gang Gangs was on Goollooinboin - including a fledgling
keeping up a continuous squawk which must be so annoying for its parents,
and a Wedge-tail Eagle carrying prey landed amongst trees after being
pursued by ravens on Saturday, and a Little Eagle on Sunday - we didn't
have time to investigate but it looks as if it has a nestling somewhere on
an escarpment near Grove Cottage.
Pallid Cuckoo was heard Goollooinboin Saturday, and a Barn Owl was
disturbed from the back of The Poplars in Glen Davis - flew to the tall
casuarinas on the Capertee river, and the same bird, or a second, was seen
near the Capertee River/Glen Alice turn off later that evening. A
Shining-bronze Cuckoo joined us for lunch on Sunday, picking grubs from
amongst the apricot flowers outside Grove Cottage and upsetting the Blue
Wrens. Many birds were in spring mode - pair of Hobbies were seen early
morning doing formation flying, Restless Flycatchers chasing each other,
Blue Wrens seeing off the inferior males, life was all go for the birds in
the valley, although some were well in advance like the Black-shouldered
Kites with 2 well-developed fledglings on the wing and the afore-mentioned
Speckled Warblers and two flocks of Turquoise Parrots (5 and 8+),
Black-chinned and Striped Honeyeaters were in Red Rock (edge of Gdns of
Stone Nat.Park) Sunday afternoon. Also Diamond Finches were much in
evidence most places in the valley. Goollooinboin and Red Rock Atlas forms
will go to BA.
People attending BIGNET saw Swift Parrots and nesting Regent Honeyeaters
amongst all the other species - over a hundred seen during the weekend.
Sunday was a magic afternoon after being cooped up in the Glen Davis
community hall Saturday and Sun am - thanks to Ephie and Rob Pructor of the
Glen Davis Community Association for providing the food for the delegates.
Much appreciated by all.
