Northern Duck Moult

Hi all,
Given the questions being asked about the origin of the N. Pintail and N.
Shoveler thought I'd summarize the timing of previous records of these
species in Australia. All but one record were taken from HANZAB and I
understand all are of males in breeding plumage (both species). I don't know
much about moult in Northern hemisphere ducks but obviously vagrant
individuals do end up out of sync with the majority of the population at
times.

N. Pintail
1) 50km NE Perth WA 12 July 1985

N. Shoveler
1) Louth NSW March 1975 (Specimen)
2) Coongie lakes SA 28 August 1979
3) Buckland Park SA 3 Sept- 11 Oct 1986
4) Buckland Park SA 12 Aug- Sept 1987
5) Werribee Vic 10-13 Dec 1983
6) L Namming WA 23 July 1982
7) Werribee Vic 7-9 Sept 1999

Interesting to note that 4 of the 7 Northern Shoveler records are in the
Aug-Sept period.

Cheers
Rohan
