The recent debate over disclosing threatened bird
locations has been very interesting from a New South Wales perspective.
Essentially the decision in NSW has been to release
all locational information for all species located on State Forest to any
person who asks for the information. This decision is a legal requirement
of State Forests through the recent Regional Forest Agreement decisions. To
release this information has been determined as a legally binding
requirement of State Forests of NSW. It has been enshrined by the NSW
National Parks and Wildlife Service in the Threatened Species Licence which
is part of the Integrated Forestry Operations Approval that authorises
harvesting of native forest.
State Forests of NSW conducts extensive threatened
species surveys prior to harvesting in each compartment and the results of
these surveys (AMG, Species, record type) are then compiled as part of the
harvesting Plan and documented on a 1:10,000 scale colour map of the 200ha
compartment.
All of which are available for viewing and copying
at the Regional office.
Therefore all records, including those from the
extensive database for threatened flora and fauna, are readily available to
any enthusiast at 50 cents a page.
