Hello All
I've not had much to report as my days largely consist of sitting on my
backside painting birds for the next book (18 plates down, six to go.
Publication date, hopefully Sept/Oct). I can tell you that the resident
scrubfowl prefers budgie seed to fruit (at least watermelon and tinned
fruit salad!) and that White-gaped Honeyeaters have successfully raised
young in a nest outisde the bedroom window.
Recent birding trips are turning up the usual variety - Chestnut Rail at
Stuart Park mangroves, Mangrove, Large-billed and Green-backed Gerygones
at the sewage pond, Zitting Cisticolas or at least glimpses of them, at
Leanyer Swamp. Two interesting birds - Red-chested Button-quail at
Holmes Jungle and Scarlet Honeyeater at Stuart Park mangroves.
At the end of the month I join the tall ship Leeuwin as 'environmental
expert' (their term not mine) for an 11 day trip around the Arnhemland
coast. We'll be visiting the Wessels, Cobourg Peninsula, perhaps Croker
Island (where I have relatives). I'll be checking with the 'Over the
Top' mob, otherwise known as the Gove Yacht Club, at Dinah Beach Cruising
Yacht Club on the weekend when they're in town. I hope to be able to
report some 'good' birds.
