WEATHER ; Partly cloudy,[5/8 cover], sunny periods especially beyond the shelf. Cool. Light NW breeze c. 5knots at first, calm at shelf, light E inshore late PM.  SEA.-Almost flat in bay, sloppy sea on 2-4m swell going out but settling in PM on lower swell.
 
ACTIVITY ; Sailed 07.35, Docked 16.15  [Sunrise 07.50].  Passed Lawence Rocks [LR] at 0805 & headed out SW   
Paused for MINKE WHALE at 08.30 [5NM  SW of LR], Speed 13knots.  Crossed shelf break [100fathoms] at 10.10 and berleyed in 160fathoms till 10.55.[1]  Moved out deeper & berleyed again 11.40-12.30 at 200fathoms after we joined one of three trawlers [2].  Headed out to 300fathoms & berleyed 13.00 to 13.20.
Headed in at 13.20 speeding up at 13.50.  Reached LR at 15.45 where we paused watching Skuas.  Berleyed with Shark liver.
 
ANIMALS ;   MINKE WHALE,   SEALS, 1pelagic, 2offshore & inshore.
 
BIRDS;  Good diversity [23sp.] & abundance
 
Little Penguin  3 [1] 1pelagic,  1bay, 1harbour.
Northern Giant Petrel  2 [1] 1pelagic, 1 bay @ LR
Cape Petrel  15 [13] All pelagic.  None at first berley station.
Great-winged Petrel  6 [4]  All nominate race, pelagic.
Antarctic Prion  1offshore.   Large size, dark head & collar, long tail but passed quickly.
Slender-billed Prion.  1pelagic.  Good close views. Pale, tiny black tip upper tail & all ID points seen.
Fairy Prion  110 [50] 80pelagic, 20offshore, 10inshore [mostlyPM] Whilst moving, ID assumed.
Sooty Shearwater   1pelagic
Short-tailed Shearwater   1 in the bay [PM]
Fluttering/Huttons Shearwater   2inshore
Wandering Albatross  4pelagic, 1 antipodensis st[3], 1st [1], 1st[2], 1st 3/4  Photos.
Black-browed Albatross 430 [300]  420 nom. race; 10 inpasida.  5bay, 11inshore. 14offshore, 400pelagic. 390adults, 35sub-ad, 5juv.
Shy Albatross  155 [100]  2inshore, 3offshore, 150pelagic.  120adults, 30sub-ad., 5 juv.
Grey-headed Albatross  1pelagic. Initially followed in to offshore zone.  2-3 years old.
Yellow-nosed Albatross  5 [3] 1inshore, 4 pelagic.  4adults, 1 juv.
Sooty Albatross   1adult. Pelagic. To within 10M passing over boat.
Light-mantled Sooty Albatross  1pelagic.  2-300M from boat. Visible for about 1minute
Wilson's Storm-petrel   3 [2] pelagic.
Grey-backed Storm-petrel.  60 [30] pelagic,  Perhaps most ever.
Australasian Gannet   c.5000 Most on LR, 5inshore, 3offshore, 1pelagic.  None Feeding.
Great Skua   5 harrassing Gannets at LR.  Photos.
Silver Gull  12  4bay,   8 LR,
Pacific Gull  1 in harbour
Crested Tern  5  4bay, 1pelagic,  Others in harbour [lots]
White-fronted Tern  3  2offshore, 1pelagic
Black-faced Cormorant  8 on LR
