Back in April I travelled to Paterson in the Hunter Valley, NSW, to
attend the 9th Australasian Bat Conference. My travelling partners on
the way up were Grant Baverstock and Richard Dilena, and on the way back
(to Melbourne) we were joined by Martin Schulz. The weather on the way
up on 24 and 25 April was pretty good, and we stopped in at a few points
in the Capertee Valley and thereabouts to do some birding. David
Geering gave us some excellent directions to prime locations. The
undoubted highlight was a mixed flock of finches near the Goolloonboin
Station gate, which comprised about 60 Plum-headed Finches (about half
were juveniles), and then lesser numbers of Red-browed, Zebra and
Double-barred Finches, Diamond Firetails, and (!!) House Sparrows.

The conference was held at 'Tocal', or more officially the C.B.
Alexander Agricultural College, at Paterson near Maitland. The
post-conference field trip was held in the Gloucester Tops area of the
Barrington Tops National Park. Highlights there were many and varied,
but unfortunately didn't include the Rufous Scrub-bird. On the way back
south we went south from Gloucester to go through Booral to the Pacific
Highway. Near Booral we saw the most extraordinary thing - a mixed
soaring flock of 30 eagles - 27 Wedge-tailed Eagles (some paired) and 3
White-bellied Sea-Eagles. This caused a major blip on the BOP Watch
form, and is something none of us had ever seen the like of before.
Maybe Australian raptors do occasionally form diminutive version of the
spectacular Northern Hemisphere migratory flocks!?

Lists of birds (plus mammals, reptiles, frogs and butterflies) follow.
