There is a Birds Australia WA Group brochure for Esperance (south east
Western Australia) that is very good. You could try phoning Kate Dawson on
08 9071 3304 for details of where to get the brochure in Esperance and up to
date information.
I highly recommend the half day boat trip to Woody Island if it is still
operating at this time of the year. You should see Cape Barren Goose and
Black-faced Cormorant on the islands during the trip. It is a popular
tourist attraction, so the others may be interested. The weather may be dicy.
Hooded Plover is a very good chance on any of the lakes around Esperance.
Lake Warden is a very good chance. Try the northern side off Stearne Road.
The lakes near the golf course are another good chance. The pamphlet also
recommends following the South Coast Highway for 3.4km north west out of
town and look for a track on the right (north) that heads to the lake. This
is also a recommended site for Rufous Fieldwren.
Stearne Road at the south (or south west) end of the road is a recommended
place to look for Cape Barren Goose on the mainland. There is a paddock
where wheat is put out to feed the geese.
Red-eared Firetail is a chance on Woody Island near the water tank. A good
site is Lake Monjingup. Follow the South Coast Highway north west and look
for the signposted turnoff to the left. It isn't too far out of town.
Cape Le Grande National Park is a popular place for tourists. The roads can
be corrugated, but 2WD should be OK. If you get to Rossiter Beach, then
walk around the headland to the right. I have seen Black-faced Cormorant
here. Rufous Fieldwren is a chance in the low heath on the way to Rossiter
Beach.
I don't know where to find Regent Parrot, Shy Heathwren, Purple-gaped
Honeyeater, Tawny-crowned Honeyeater or Southern Scrub-robin in the
Esperance area. Most of these are mallee species.
You didn't say how you were getting to Esperance. From Perth? or across
the Nullarbor? And where else in the south west are you travelling? You
can most of the species at other sites.
