eyes vs ears

I was out atlassing round Mt Gravatt on Saturday and noted a general
lack of smaller kingfishers [normally quite numerous]. A couple of
times I heard what sounded like a forest kingfisher, but saw nothing.

Late Sat afternoon, I heard another fkf-like call - I followed the call,
to find not a fkf, but a flipping drongo [wearing a smirk like
gambolling jon]!!!

Sure enough, the field guide noted that drongos engage in mimicry in
addition to their gabbling.

While I will atlas on the basis of bird-calls, this is another example
why seeing is better than hearing, particularly when observing a species
for the first time.

Regards, Laurie.
