Hi Stuart

There's a voluminous literature on this topic!  A good starting point might be:

   * Bibby, C.J. et al. (1992).  Bird Census Techniques.  (Academic Press:
     London).  ISBN 0-12-095830-9

It's British, but don't hold that against it, and quite readable.  I know the
State Library (city) has a copy.  The Birds Australia library may do too.

That's more complex.  Firstly you need a permit (and before that the experience
to get one) to trap/release small mammals.  You can't really do a comprehensive
survey without trapping (live of course - not snap traps!!).  Maybe an already
licenced group could help you there.  Feel free to ask more questions.
