Spent a couple of weeks in Syria recently. Two places to
visit:

* If you are in Damascus make sure you visit the markets.
There is an 'animal' section and they have lot of unusual
birds for sales - a bid unsettling, but interesting
none-the-less.

* Also if you are in the area definately visit Palmyra -
extrodinary ancient ruins. See:

   http://www.visit-syria.com/anglais/palmyrang.html

And make sure you stay in the Hotel Zenobia! A range of
unusual desert birds (make sure you have a descent guide!).
The following is ok - and it also covers Europe.

Title: Birds of Europe : With North Africa and the
           Middle East
   Author: Lars Jonsson, David Christie
   Publisher: Princeton University Press
   Date Published: June 1996

Also:

Birds of the Middle East by R. F. Porter, P.
   Schiermacker-Hansen, S. Christensen

There is a ornithological society of the middle east -

Just a general note on Syria and Jordan - it is safe. For
example, one comment made about this area is that you can
leave your bag on a street corner and it will still be
there the next day. The people are extremely nice, although
there is a lot of 'secret police' who are surprisingly
harmless.

Hope this helps and I would love to see your bird list.
