I finally found two Eastern Curlew at Picnic Point -The Entrance
yesterday(2/2). The bird of interest had a very short bill probably 4-6
cm shorter than its companion. After observing the bird resting,
preening and feeding for 1 1/2 hours it finally lifted its wings to
reveal barring . This confirmed a glimpse of a russet-brown rump
earlier, that indeed this bird was a Eastern Curlew.

After consultation with Tony Palliser, who confirmed the UK obsever had
based his identification on bill length and size, I'm reasoanably
confident that I was observing the same bird and am happy to declare a
false alarm.
