Happy New Year .... and welcome back to Birding-Aus.

Sounds like Goschen Bushland Reserve is still a happening place (between Lake
Boga and Sea Lake in NW Victoria).

On 30/12/1999 I dropped in at Angel's Rest Flora & Fauna Reserve just south of
Sea Lake when I was on my way to the Sunset Country. Angel's Rest is a small
linear mallee reserve just off the Calder Highway, with great vegetation
including some Berrigan (Eremophila longifolia) still in flower. I saw at least
2 (probably 4) Pied Honeyeaters there - all immatures. I presume they nested
there, but as the birds are quite mobile they could be from elsewhere???

Further to Lawrie's comments, I and four others saw 2 adult male Pied
Honeyeater on the South Brambill Track in the Murray-Sunset NP on 31/12/1999.
We also saw a largish flock of Crimson Chats a bit further north of here. Two
were observed mating!

Lots of talk of first birds for the year, how about last birds of 1999? We had
a group of Mallee Emu-wren on Pheeney's Track at about 1300 on 31/12/1999.
First bird for 2000 for nine of us (Susan Myers, Stuart Dashper, Scott &
Cecilia Chandry, Lawrie Conole, Fiona Kinsey, Alex & Jeanette Kutt & Doug
Futuyma) who celebrated in style in the mallee was Willie Wagtail, which
started calling loudly at 0430 outside the Shearer's Hut. Arguably, not an
auspicious start!

Happy Birding in 2000!

Susan
