My 21 year old daughter is in the UK, and is a fledgling birder after a
few birding t rips in Qld with me and other birders, and a birding trip
to Africa. I have sent her money to buy a field guide as she is getting
frustrated at not being able to identify the birds she is seeing. I
have been told there is a Field Guide which cover the UK and Europe, and
as she will be travelling this would be good. Can anyone give me the
name of this Guide please. R
There are many such books, almost all of which would do for a
beginner. The new Collins Bird Guide by Mullarney et al is certainly the
best, but it is so thorough a beginner might find it overwhelming; Lars
Johnsson's "Birds of Europe" is also highly regarded, and there are also
old standbys like the Peterson, Mountfort and Hollom guide. If she is a
beginner she might want to stick to a Britain-only guide - a quite nice
one is "Pocket Guide to the Birds of Britain and North-west Europe" by
Kightly, Madge and Nurney (and it is certainly small and
portable). Anyway, all these and more should be on sale in any good
bookshop - there are lots of choices. If she is in London the best
selection is at Foyles Book Shop, which has a staggeringly huge natural
history section on its third floor.
