I've just today returned from a field trip to Barmah Forest, during
which I've been censusing birds and recording foraging observations.
Barmah is about 40km east of Echuca on the Murray River in north-central
Victoria, and with the contiguous Moira and Gulpa Island forests in NSW
is the largest River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) forest in
existence.

The most interesting records for me were those of Superb Parrots feeding
a fledgling; 2 Painted Honeyeaters; Dollarbirds still feeding young in a
nest hollow (they were doing so a week or more ago when I was last
there); a Brush Cuckoo calling near camp one evening (Chris Tzaros might
be interested in that one!); a Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoo making a crash
raid to lay an egg in a Superb Fairy-wren nest; the sheer amount of
late/supplementary breeding. The full list follows beneath my signature
block.

Cheers -- Lawrie
