I find that the more you ask for money the easier it gets. I now have no
compunction about ringing relatives and asking for sponsorship. I also use
the internal mailing list at work, describing the Twitchathon and the
cause? for the year. (I always follow up by wandering round and asking
people.)

It is best to simply ask for a donation rather than an amount per bird -
people are rather nervous about this. After the event I always send an
email report of our results, thanking the people who supported me. This
year we raised about $200, making it well worthwhile, despite my being on
crutches with little chance of seeing many birds.

Other friends in the past have approached local businesses that they
support with their custom, even offering to have T-shirts made with
significant sponsors listed on the back. (This never eventuated.) On the
negative side, preparing flyers and dropping them in local letterboxes had
no effect.

It would be wonderful if the Twitchathon could receive more publicity in
the media, but I have no idea what efforts are made in this area. Perhaps
individuals could try for articles in their local papers?

Regards,

Susan Knowles
