Many thanks to all who responded to my query: I was surprised and
delighted by the number and value of the replies.

As a result I've already alerted the Council to the possibility that
they are nesting and have got a sympathetic response to leaving the
local cape weed alone (because I've been told that red-rumps will feed
on the flowers well before seed is clearly set).

There's a possibility that some of our precious native grass seed stock
will be sown in the area too. And if they don't go ahead and I'm still
worried (I've seen the male fly 400m.) there have been useful
suggestions about what to do (e.g. provide sunflower seeds and raw
carrot).
