Good One Annabel!
There are not many Masked Owl records west of the Ranges these days,
but presumably they were more common when the woodlands and not crops covered
the Liverpool Plains! I will place the record in the FOC Newsletter "Unusual
sightings" (and drop one of the those rare seabird records) and the NSW
1999 Annual Bird Report!

I
have another good sighting to report. My
husband called me outside the other night to say a very big bird had flown
over his head. I got the spotlight out and we found it sitting
in a cyprus pine and got fantastic views.I
feel sure it was a masked owl.We
get a lot of barn owls around here (Gunnedah On NW slopes of NSW).
This bird was a lot bigger, the dark line around its mask was very obvious
and it had tawny colouration around the side of its neck plus streaks down
its breast.Cheers
