Hi Bette

A late follow up to your concerns about the increase in kelp gulls in
Victoria.

Kelp gulls have been increasing in number around the ocean side of Phillip
Island for a number of years now. I have recorded them on all recent trips
to PI [100 kms south east of Melbourne] for the last three years, from Kitty
Millers Bay to the Nobbies. Those in immature plumage require some
separating from the Pacifics, which are also present in this area.

I have not yet seen the Kelp Gull at Rhyll or on the Bay side of the Island
[eg Observation Point], but those working at the Penguin Reserve have
suggested that the numbers are increasing.
