Hi everyone,
had a flying visit to Mildura over the weekend and got about an hours
birdwatching at Yarrarra Flora and Fauna reserve about 1hr
west of Mildura (by car). The most obvious birds at Yarrarra were the
Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters, probably outnumbering all other
birds combined by a total of 5:1. Also their calls at dawn were coming from
every corner of the forest and almost every tree. Was
able to find both White-browed Treecreeper and Gilbert's Whistler which had
been the main focus of the journey. Both were seen
almost in the shadow of the Yarrarra silo just beside the road. The
White-browed Treecreepers were significantly smaller than I
had expected, almost giving the impression of a large sitella. Their call was
also very distinctive allowing for no confusion with
Brown Treecreepers.
Other birds at Yarrara included
Apostlebird
Grey Butcherbird
Singing Honeyeater
Mistletoebird
Red-capped Robin
Southern Whiteface
Chestnut-rumped Thornbill
White-browed Babbler
Mallee Ringneck

Other interesting birds for the weekend (for a Southerner) included
Splendid Fairy-wren
Variegated Fairy-wren
Darter
Zebra Finch
Blue-Faced Honeyeater
Little Corella

Best Wishes
John Boyce
