Thanks to all who replied to my question regarding birds that eat
leeches.
As a postscript, it might be relevant to recount a story which my
boss told me yesterday (and he was unaware of my question to Birding-
aus):
My boss was in a canyon on the weekend and found a big fat blood-
filled leech attached to his leg. He flicked it off, and it rolled
down the rocks to where a young Water Dragon (Physignathus lesueurii)
was sitting nearby. The Water Dragon's eyes lit up, it ran towards
the leech and grabbed it in its jaws. Then it immediately spat the
leech back out and shook its head, and it spent the next 10 minutes
trying to spit the taste out of its mouth.
My boss was in fits of laughter as he told me this and you should
have seen him imitating the look of disgust on the Water Dragon's
face! It doesn't say much for the taste of leeches, or perhaps the
taste of my boss' blood.
