Hi Birders,
41 campers joiuned the combined NSWFOC/CBOC Camp at Norman & Edna
Kurtz's property Balmoral at Cooyal, between Mudgee and Munghorn Gap
Nature Reserve on the Wollar Road. The property is mostly cattle & fat
lamb grazing with some wheat cropping. The area was formerly box\pine
woodland, now only some remnant clumps of trees are protected while the
two flowing streams, Stoney & Cooyal Creek have timbered watercourses
lined mostly with Yellow Box, Rough-barked Apple, Apple Box and some
Manna Gum. The camp unfortunately commenced and finished in rain, but
Sat & Sun were relatively rain free so that the property was well
explored, and visits made to Munghorn Gap NR and Goulburn River NP and
areas between. C. 20 atlas sheets were completed. Highlighhts at Cooyal
were 3 Tawny Frogmouths and a Boobook seen on a spotlight activity,
Little Eagle, Hobby, Brown Goshawk & Wedge-tailed Eagles. Hooded Robin,
Peaceful Dove, Speckled Warbler, Diamond Firetail were seen in the
remnant bush. Nearby were 12 White-backed Swallows on Cooyal Ck; At
Munghorn Gap NR Spotted Quail-thrush, Red-browed Treecreepers, Rock
Warblers, Emus, Shrike-tit & Cicadabirds were the highlights. At
Goulburn River NP were 2 Glossy Black Cockatoos, 2 Turquoise Parrots,
Scarlet Honeyeaters, late Channel-billed Cuckoos, Painted Button-quail &
Collared Sparrowhawk. Bee-eaters and White-throated Gerygones still
lingering on! At the adjacent property owned by Eillen Coombs,
Black-chinned & Spiney-cheeked Honeyeaters were seen but the expected
Regent Honeyeaters failed to show! Betwen Bylong & Wollar 15 Plum-headed
Finches, Zebra & Double-barred Finches were found, and between MG &
Wollar, Hooded Robin, 18 Diamond Firetails, Striped Honeyeaters &
Restless Flycatchers were located. Despite the rain 127 species were
seen. In Mudgee Street trees a Musk Lorikeets, Noisy Friarbirds and
Scarlet Honeyaters were feeding in some blossoming Ironbarks. Alan
Richards & Alan Morris were the organisers.

Separate bird lists for the 3 main areas will be available on request.
