Anybody thinking of a birding trip to southern Spain this coming austral
winter and spring? You could help our Spanish BirdLife partner, the
Sociedad Española de Ornitología, on their annual survey of autumn
migration across the Strait of Gibraltar. If you are interested, read on...

MIGRATION THROUGHT THE STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR
MONITORING SHEME

(Programa MIGRES)

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS, AUTUMN 1999

The Strait of Gibraltar (southern tip of Cádiz province, Andalucía, Spain)
is the most important ?bottle-neck? for central and western europe
migratory birds crossing the Mediterranean Sea, travelling towards and from
their wintering quarters in the african continente. Their only 14 km of
maximun wide made this area specially important for soaring birds (storks,
vultures, eagles?), wich during autumn migration concentrates by hundreds
of thousands in the area of Tarifa waiting for suitable winds to allow them
crossing to Africa.

The Regional Government of Andalucía (Consejería de Medio Ambiente, Junta
de Andalucía) is funding from 1997 onwards, and for a period of five years,
the monitoring of autumn migration of soaring birds, as a first phase of
wich wants to be a complete long term monitoring scheme of bird migration
throught the Strait of Gibraltar (Programa MIGRES). Coordination of field
work is done by the Spanish partner of BirdLife International (Sociedad
Española de Ornitología).

During four months (mid July-mid October) different observatories are
placed along the Spanish migration front of the Strait of Gibraltar each
year, and volunteers are needed to cover them, together with the
specialists responsibles of the project. Volunteers will be selected
according with their own experience, disponibility of time, knowledge of
the area (althought not imprescindible). Food and accomodation expenses
will be fully covered by the Junta de Andalucía, and minimum periods of 12
or 15 days of staying are required from the start of the campaign (15
July), with fixed days for arrival and departure that will be confirmed.
Applications should be received before 15 May 1999, and confirmation by
coordinators, and further information, will be send to volunteers during June.

Volunteers will be asked for a brief curriculum (not neccessary for
participants in previous MIGRES campaigns) and details about prefered
dates. For registration and information:
