Highlights from twice-weekly Canberra Ornithologists' Group (COG) hotline,
for period ending 22 February (some reports are of earlier obs).

MY APOLOGIES FOR THE PERIOD SINCE LAST POSTING; LIFE HAS INTERVENED.
OBVIOUSLY THIS REDUCES THE VALUE OF SOME OF THE OBS, SO I'VE SUMMARISED
QUITE A BIT.

LATHAMS SNIPE 18/1 single at suburban Jerrabomberra Wetlands [one of
the only records for the year at a place normally their stronghold. The
large group reported just before Christmas disappeared again - presumably
this was a group moving]

WHITE-BREASTED SEA-EAGLE 21/1 & 15/2 over Lake Burley Griffin (the
centre of Canberra)

NIGHT HERONS 19/1 3 at Jerrabomberra

INTERMEDIATE EGRET 20/1 & 25/1 Jerrabomberra (very uncommon here)

SPINE-TAILED SWIFTS 20/1 1 only, over suburban Weston [remarkably,
just the second record for the year, since two small groups reported minutes
apart on 17/12. We would expect reports to peak next month - about 3 would
do it!! - just before departure]

HOODED PLOVERS 24/1 pair at Tathra, far south coast [which IS part of
suburban Canberra in school holidays!]

REGENT HONEYEATERS 28/1 2, surprisingly on end of headland at
Narrawallee, just N of Ulladulla (south of Wollongong) in flowering
Blackbutt (E. pilularis) [see comment above re its pertinence to our hotline...]

GENERAL MOVEMENTS. There are surprisingly early signs of outward movement.
Nothing major yet, but good evidence from NOisy Friarbirds, Dusky
Woodswallows, Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes, Grey Fantails, Tree Martins. Our
peak exodus is around mid-late April eg Anzac Day is the traditional day to
observe the great honeyeater migration along the Murrumbidgee River
