SIPO observed pm 19 January with Mike Carter, Bo Totterman and my son Alistair.
Beach south of Ballina can be accessed via Boundary Road off Pacific Highway
5kms south of Wardell bridge or Paddys beach access to the north. This beach
is 17kms long and the Oystercatchers were between these two accesses. A 4x4
vehicle is required for beach access otherwise you may have a very long walk.
We were fortunate enough to see SIPO with two OZPO's, but just up the beach
was a large flock of 62 OZPO's with quite a few juveniles. Refer to Mike
Carters article in the Spring 98 issue of Australian Birding. The bird is
difficult to pick on the ground , but in flight the Greenshank like rump,
obvious white upper wing bar and much more white in the underwing is clearly
obvious. This is of course when SIPO is flying with OZPO's.
