Thinking about swifts and their wintering stay in Australia, it occurs to me
that their famous running before a storm front must be connected with their
food-supply. After a storm the flyign insects will either have been forced
to land, or washed out of the air, so it makes sense that the swifts would
want to stay in front of storm-fronts.

It may be that the swifts penetrate to southern Queensland by this time, but
further south the storm-fronts that would push them further south do not
begin to form until later in the year.
